With a jaundiced eye, Vasyli Sokolov watched the strange armored vehicle approach his 2S7 Malka howitzer. It looked something like a standard ammunition supply vehicle but bulkier, as if it were more heavily armored than the usual ones. Or could they have expanded it to carry more rounds? he wondered.

It was always nice to get more ammunition for their cannon but they presently had their full load of eight projectiles aboard the Malka itself. Their support vehicle had four more. It’d be surprising to receive a delivery when they could only take four rounds before they’d be full up.

The approaching vehicle came to a halt and a captain got out. Stranger and stranger, Vasyli thought, it being unusual for an officer to be with the crew of a delivery vehicle. Must be something else, he decided. He, being a lieutenant, stood up.

The captain asked, “Are you ready?”

“Ready for what, sir?”

“The delivery.”

“What are you delivering?”

The captain sighed, “The cart is before the horse, as usual. We have two Klashchevinas for you.”

Vasyli’s heart skipped a beat and he suddenly sat back down. “Klashchevinas?” he repeated weakly. Klashchevinas were nuclear rounds for his cannon. They had a yield equivalent to 700 tons of TNT.

He’d never imagined he might load one into his Malka. Even the Malka’s maximum range of 37.5 kilometers didn’t seem sufficient for hurling nuclear weapons. Besides, he didn’t want this shitty war to escalate even further.

“Yes, Klashchevinas!” the captain said abruptly, bringing Vasyli out of his daze. “On your feet, man! Let’s get these things into your support vehicle!”
